1940
In 1940, the Kalnapilis brewery was nationalised and operated on a small scale, as most of the men who could work were called up for war.
The history of Kalnapilis began in 1902, when on January 1, the German landowner Albert Foight brewed the first batch of beer at the Bergschlösschen brewery in Panevėžys, the centre of Aukštaitija, famous for its brewing traditions.
The name 'Bergschlösschen' in the mother tongue of the founder meant 'a small castle on a hill'. The brewery got this name because of its unusual location: it was built in an empty field on the bank of the Nevėžis River on a high hill.
In 1940, the Kalnapilis brewery was nationalised and operated on a small scale, as most of the men who could work were called up for war.
It was not until 1935 that Bergschlösschen was renamed Kalnapilis.
The biggest renovation work on the company began in 1960. The manual work was replaced by machines and the old brewery buildings were replaced by new factory buildings.
In 1988, the reconstruction project of the bottling department was prepared at Kalnapilis Brewery.
The brewery has over a hundred years of brewing experience, the brewery did not stop operating even during the wars. As a result, Kalnapilis is the only Lithuanian factory that has never stopped producing beer since its foundation.
In 1970, a new malting plant was built, capable of producing up to 10,000 tonnes of malt per year.
In 1992, the Kalnapilis Brewery was privatised by 3,600 shareholders.
In March 1996, Kalnapilis became the first brewery in Lithuania to start advertising Lithuanian beer: the newly released Kalnapilis Dvaro. Lithuanian jazz star Arina appeared in the clip ‘Look for the Best’ broadcast on several national televisions. Later, the best Lithuanian basketball player of all time Arvydas Sabonis and musician Gytis Paškevičius took part in the promotion of this beer.
In independent Lithuania, Kalnapilis was among the leaders in brewing: it offered many innovations, new types of beer, and made Lithuania famous for its delicious beer. The brewers received a well-deserved reward for improving the taste of beer: the best beer experts in the world awarded Kalnapilis beer with the highest awards. Kalnapilis became the first fully modernised brewery after the restoration of Lithuania’s independence. The now customary embossed bottles, into which many breweries pour beer, and beer cans were also a novelty introduced by Kalnapilis. Today, almost all types of beer brewed by Kalnapilis have won awards.

From 2007 to the present day, Kalnapilis actively supports Lithuanian sports clubs and pays special attention to the teams of Panevėžys.
